Workshop 2. Threats of land use change and urbanisation on soil ecosystem services
(Workshop details, pdf), (Some of the presentations held at the workshop)
What?
The second SOILSERVICE workshop, dealing with threats that urbanization can pose to ecosystem services, gathers together researchers tackling with urban issues both from ecological, sociological, and economical perspective, and ecologist and economist from the SOILSERVICE project.
Why?
Ever increasing growth of human population and urbanization rate leads to accelerating modification of rural areas to urbanised areas. This, often permanent change in land use, raises questions about the consequences that urbanization have not only for humans, but also for functioning of urban ecosystems. The aim of this workshop is to discuss the specific features of urban ecosystems and to create suggestions for the policymakers and stakeholders how ecosystem services and urban biodiversity can be enhanced in cities.
Who?
In total there will be 35 participants, including economists, members of the Commission, policy makers and soil and urban ecologists.
When?
The program starts on Monday, February 1 at noon and will end at February 2 evening. The workshop consists of lectures given by invited speakers and discussions in small groups in which the topics governing urban ecology issues are chewed over.
Where?
The workshop will be organized in Finland in February 1-2, 2010 in Lammi Biological Station, a field station belonging to the Faculty of Biosciences of the University of Helsinki. Lammi is about 120 km north from city of Helsinki and the nearest towns are Lahti (about 40 km) and Hämeenlinna (about 45 km). There will be a bus transport from the city of Lahti to Lammi on Monday morning at 9 a.m. and back on Wednesday morning.
